What is a IDS?

IDS, Intrusion Detection Systems are used to detect when a intruder tries to access resources on your network.  IDS can detect a virus/spyware/adware moving across your network, a remote user using terminal services to connect to a server and thousands of vulnerabilities attempts.  Most IDS systems report but do not stop attacks.

What is a IPS?

IPS, Intrusion Prevention Systems, can do the same functions as most IDS.   The difference, IPS can block the traffic/attack.  IPS can take some time to configure.  An IPS device needs to know what is good traffic.  Example:  the remote user using terminal services, this would be good traffic that should be allowed to pass.  The IPS can alert you when a user uses terminal services, give you the IP address of the remote user and show that the traffic was allowed to pass thru the network.  You could then review the alert and make sure it was a remote user and not an intrusion attempt.

Do I need a firewall?

Yes, Firewalls lock down ports and only allow traffic thru those ports (web, mail).

Is a Firewall enough protection?

How much will it cost if data is stolen or destroyed?  If a spyware software renders your PC/Server useless for a day while it is being rebuilt, how much is that technician going to cost?  How much is the time of the employees that can't work due to this outage worth?  What if your competitor gets the data and starts taking away sales/customers, what does that cost?  If these costs are a concern, a IPS with a built in firewall might be a better solution.

IPS cost to much?

We have solutions that are budgeted around small business needs.

Can I build a IDS?

Yes, there are open source IDS systems that can be built.  These systems are a good starting point for anyone that is new to IDS/security.  Example: you just want to see what is floating around on your network.

Secure Networks also can help you build a IDS or prebuild a system for you, train you on updating the system and answer any questions about alerts.
